I don’t often veer into the overtly political in this blog, despite my confirmed status as a political junkie. But two stories that I happened to catch this evening compel me to comment, briefly.
According to the Huffington Post, Rep. Trent Franks (R-Az.) asserted that president Obama “has no place in any station of government and we need to realize that he is an enemy of humanity.” Has no place in any station of government? – he was elected president by a healthy majority. Is an enemy of humanity? Excuse me???
In an article linked directly below the one quoting Rep. Franks, we learn that Andy Williams (remember him? Of Moon River crooning fame?) asserts that Obama “wants the country to fail.” Right. Of course he does. Why wouldn’t he?
What are these people drinking? (Clearly they are not thinking!)
Disagree with the man, fine! But, to suggest that he wants the country to fail or that he is an enemy of humanity is beyond the pale. When are we going to stop this nonsense once and for all?
No one on the left asserted that Bush wanted the country to fail. They asserted that he made some bad decisions, led us into a war of choice (in Iraq) rather than a war of necessity, but even then, none of them said it was because he wanted the country to fail or that he was an enemy of humanity.
Jimmy Carter was roundly vilified for suggesting that racism might have something to do with some of the harshest (read: stupidest) criticisms of Obama. I don’t know whether he was right or not, but, please – when is the last time you can remember such outlandish charges being leveled against a president? Enemy of humanity? Wants the country to fail?
Get a grip, folks. Fight for the policies in which you believe with respect and decency and decorum. Maybe you’ll win.
Namaste.

Brian, I am sick at heart about all of this (I wish I could say 'nonsense', but unfortunately it's all too real and taken far too seriously by far too many) vilification. I think this is exactly what the far right has fomented, what they hoped would happen. I worry that Obama will not fail, but that our beloved country will fail because they need to have a scapegoat, and who better than an African-American president who has not yet completed one year of presidency. I cannot help but think of the young man who rode into Jerusalem with Hosannas and Halleluias who was crucified a week later by the same people who welcomed him. I think I've said this before. Obama is being set up as much as anyone has ever been setup, and my heart aches, not only for him, but for what has happened to the United States of America. Shame on us! All of us, for allowing this to go on and on. When did we become so hateful, so bent on destroying what we have tried so hard to build over the last four centuries. Are we mad? Where did we lose our bearings, or did we never really have them? May God forgive us, and give us strength, for we surely need it now more than ever.
ReplyDeleteBrian, well done as usual, you're always on point regardless if I agree with it. I really disagree with Mary's comment though.
ReplyDeleteRespectfully, see my comment below.
As Mary indicates the extreme right wing is the element that believes Obama wants the country to fail. The majority of the right wing doesn't believe that. The majority thinks the country is in trouble from flawed ideas and failing policies like TARP.
I strongly disagree with Mary, and think that all the racism occuring here is from the left from papers like the Huffington Post and crazy liberals like Jimmy Carter. It's sources like that perpetuating comments from a liberal like Jimmy Carter that have you all in a lather. This is not politics. This is not racism, except for a few of course. This is a smokescreen to divert the countries views of this mans unpopular and failing policies from GITMO to TARP.
Mary, I agree that racism still exists, but your position on this regarding President Obama is incorrect, and hurting the situation, not helping. This is all about radical left wing people and news outlets trying to divert attention away from this mans unpopular policies. The majority is the scapegoat here, not Pesident Obama.
I'm not sure what part of the country you are in, but I am in the south in an area that growth and construction are still very active. The population of hispanics here in Raleigh NC is close to 20%, and a large % are illegals. Every fast food restaraunt is 90% hispanic, they don't even bother to speak English anymore in the restaraunts anymore, except to the customer.
You want to see racism, come here.
Put down your anger for the right and face the fact that this mans policies are driving this fake racism issue, and it's being pushed pushed pushed by the left.
God Bless
Robert, with respect--
ReplyDeleteIt was from Rush Limbaugh's that I first heard the public pronouncement, and I may be paraphrasing, "I hope that President Obama fails".
I live in the Bay Area of California--we have a real polyglot here--all stripes of every kind, and we all get along pretty well together.
For the record, I don't subscribe to any kind of extremism--the far left or the far right. Life is always in the middle ground, but it is the extremes that stir things up.
Yes, I used the term "far right" once in my comment, referring to Rush Limbaugh, but the rest of the piece was more about someone being applauded and then persecuted by those who applauded him! Does that not speak to the far left? My anger is for far more than the right, Robert. I blame the media for needing to find anything sensational to sell papers, airtime, whatever, and so they milk something that could be taken innocuously into a major kerfuffle. I think you read far more into my comment than I intended. I think right, left, and center--all of us--should find a way to stop the overblown rhetoric ON ALL SIDES and let the President be a President!
You here allot of things out of Rush because he's a loudmouth right wing radical that is a lightning rod for the liberal press. They want to label this man as the voice of the party, and they tried desperately a few months back, but it didn't work, thankfully.
ReplyDeleteI'm a very conservative, right leaning person that is connected to the Republican party. I can assure you he does not speak for the party. I wish it were different because he has a nationwide voice and discusses many topics that are very accurate and important which the mainstream media intentionally ignore to protect this President, like Van Jones, ACORN.... just in the last month. Fact is, he's a radical and he's on the radio and he isn't going away!
If you want a look inside a mainstream conservative, here you go---I don't know anyone that wants this President to fail, but that doesn't change the fact that this administration is as/or is more corrupt than the last administration could have dreamed of. This President has surrounded himself with an endless supply of criminals, socialists, self proclaimed communists (2), tax cheats, liars, lobbyists, SEIU union lobbyists, ACORN, Ren. Wright, Bill Ayers.............. the list goes on and on and on.
I don't excuse these right wing/left wing radicals for a second, but please don't think this man hasn't asked for it. He heads a corrupt and dangerous group that's power hungry and shielded by the press, and that makes me worry. Rush, Hannity and FOX News (minus Glenn Beck) are the only outlets for the factual truth because your media protects him. Below is proff of this.
FOXNEWS O'REILLY 3,609,000
FOXNEWS BECK 3,340,000
FOXNEWS HANNITY 2,986,000... Read More
FOXNEWS GRETA 2,522,000
FOXNEWS BAIER 2,362,000
FOXNEWS SHEP 2,040,000
MSNBC OLBERMANN 1,573,000
MSNBC MADDOW 1,164,000
CNN KING 965,000
MSNBC HARDBALL 882,000
MSNBC SCHULTZ 734,000
CNN COOPER 691,000
The majority of American see the unbelievable bias in the media and most Independents and some Democrats are leaving the mainstream media because they report on 3 new cases of H1N1 when Van Jones is resigning or ACORN (Obama's grassroots community activist organization) is being shut down for promoting child prostitution, tax fraud, mortgage fraud.....by banks, investors, the Census Bureau....., except Obama. Notice you haven't heard a word from him about ACORN! Just imagine for a second and put the shoe on your other foot. Try to imagine this was Bush that had a corrupt federally funded organization he was tied to that did this, and a senior aid had to resign. You wouldn't be able to avoid the coverage on CNN, MSNBC, Katie, Brian and the rest of the Obama media. The mianstream media is dead. You know I'm right.
Mary, I believe that you are a good person with different views than I, but please see this man and his administration for what they are. The rest of America is.
God Bless.
Wow, this from the mouth of a white, senile, bigoted, washed up singer (Andy Williams). Due to their lack of leadership, ideas and vision of where our country needs to go the Republican Party is show casing the only thing they have to offer, the scraping of the bottom of their intellectual barrel.
ReplyDeleteWTF??? I am so tired of hearing the constantly ridiculous statements regarding our ELECTED (by the majority, folks!) leader! For goodness sakes, and the sake of this nation & the world, give this guy a chance!!! An 'enemy of humanity?" SERIOSLY? I believe he is fair minded, high minded, intelligent and will be looked back upon as a leader for our times. I wish people would cut the crap!
ReplyDeleteProps on this post!
Hey there, Texas Playwright Chick - thanks for the compliment! Here's to hoping people start cutting out the crap soon!
